4-VA @ CNU

Christopher Newport joined 4-VA in 2023. We are honored and enthused by the opportunity to collaborate with 4-VA’s roster of exceptional institutions. Teamwork comes naturally to our university, and we are proud to be one of the founding institutions in NURVA (Network for Undergraduate Research in Virginia). 

Collaborative Research 

We are particularly interested in building on our EPIIC data science grant and our partnership with Jefferson Lab’s HPDF hub. Our primary 4-VA objective is to participate in Collaborative Research Grants, especially those leading to larger, federally funded grants. We currently share research grants with William & Mary and Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University. CNU is also a participant in the statewide Laboratory Research Sharing Agreement. 

Expanded Learning Opportunities 

Under the leadership of President William G. Kelly, CNU has moved quickly to arrange articulation agreements with two Hampton Roads community colleges and more such agreements are in the works. CNU is also seeing the results of its unique Community Captains college preparation program for Newport News-area high school students. Launched in 2018, the first cohort of Community Captains will graduate from their hometown university in May 2025. 

Course and Program Development 

CNU seeks to develop more programs that serve regional students at various stages of their educational journey. This year, we launched a unique partnership with the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce to offer a badge in leadership studies to mid-career professionals. 

Emerging Tools for Education 

As a largely traditional undergraduate-serving residential institution, Christopher Newport seeks 4-VA support as we seek to adopt emerging technologies for teaching and learning. Our undergraduate students choose from more than 90 academic programs, all founded in the liberal arts and sciences. We emphasize the study of leadership and offer the internationally respected President’s Leadership Program. Christopher Newport is consistently recognized as one of the nation’s top universities for the value we offer, boasting an impressive four-year graduation rate and a stunningly beautiful just-the-right-size campus.
